Description

In the early sixteenth century, the Arregedhuys parcel, which later became the vineyard of Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, was owned by Louis de Roustaing, sieur de La Tour d'Esquivens. In 1540, he sold the Arregedhuys parcel to Arnaud de Lestonnac, an important merchant in Bordeaux. Upon their arrival in 1682 at a place then named Haut-Brion, parish of Talence, the Lazarite friars immediately began making improvements to the La Mission vineyard, converting the remaining plots covered with brushwood into parcels under vines. In 1919, Frederic Otto Woltner purchased Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion, by that time, an estate of great renown. When the Chateau was put on the market in 1983, Domaine Clarence Dillon was one of the first parties to submit a bid. When the Duchesse de Mouchy became president of Domaine Clarence Dillon, her desire to include her children in its major management decisions prompted her to have her son Robert excused from the school in Sussex.
