Sauternes
Sauternes, in Bordeaux, France, is famous for its sweet, botrytized wines made from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. The region’s unique climate created by the fog emanating off of the Ciran river, allowing for Botrytis to form on the grapes in the fall before harvest. That fact as well as the gravely soils, create wines that are known for their luscious sweetness, vibrant acidity, and rich flavors. The wines from this region often exhibit flavors of apricot, honey, and spice, with a rich, velvety texture. Due to their density and power, high quality Sauternes is often aged in some portion of new French Oak.
